What does A1C measure in a blood test?

A1C is a blood test for pre-diabetes and type II diabetes. It measures glucose counts in the red blood cells as an average over three months. This test may be used for diagnosis of diabetes or as a supplemental test for diagnosis. It may also be used to monitor diabetics on how well they are managing the disease.

The test is usually reported as a percentage and lower than 5.7% is considered normal. Pre-diabetes is between 5.7 and 6.4%. Higher than 6.5% indicates type II diabetes. A pre-diabetic can be monitored for control of blood sugar by regular tests of A1C. Diabetics are usually tested for A1C at least twice a year.

This test has made it possible for long term management of the disease.
