Austin advertising agency GSD&M coined the slogan as a call for Texans to keep their state beautiful and litter-free. Based on data, men from 16 to 24 were major contributors to litter, so the slogan’s attitude spoke directly to its target audience. Jeff Austin III, the Texas Transportation Commissioner stated, “It’s not just a prideful remark, trying to pick a fight; it’s don’t litter in Texas, don’t mess up Texas.” And it worked.
